The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins: A well-written, precisely plotted psychological thriller, ‘The Girl on the Train’ is as much a suspense story as it is a masterpiece in character study and development. The plot is written in a way that the reader cannot trust anyone including the three female narrators. This makes the plot very exciting and nerve-wrecking. The main character here is Rachael, who is a heavy drinker and whose live is falling apart. She has lost her husband and her job and yet she rides the same train everyday to the city; pretending to go to her job. Then we meet Megan, whose story begins one year after Rachel’s, and yes, on a train. We then get to know that Megan has gone missing and on the same day that Rachael has had a blackout due to overdrinking. What happens to Megan and how is she connected to Rachael? That is the rest of the story. And edgy, fast-paced thriller which is bound to please fans of this genre.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn: A complex and dark thriller told by the author of ‘Gone Girl, this is a book that will leave you emotionally exhausted by its end. ‘Dark Places’ fluctuates between the present day and the year 1985 when a man named Ben Day allegedly massacred three members of his family. It is his sister Libby who has escaped the massacre and testifies as a witness which leads to a life term for Ben. Many years pass by and finally some traces appear which indicate that Ben might have been innocent. The story is told from three perspectives: Ben Day himself, his mother Patty Day and Libby. All the POVs are interesting, frightening and sometimes dark. The characterization is splendid and real and we get to see the complex, selfish, violent and considerate nature of these characters. The mystery is gripping and the suspense buildup is pulsating. ‘Dark Places’ is intelligent, disturbing and yet awesome.

Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson: This debut novel by author S.J. Watson has a delicious and first of its kind story. The protagonist here is Christine who, at the beginning of the book, wakes up confused in a room which she fails to recognize. The room actually is her own and this, in fact, is something which happens to her every day. Christine has a form of amnesia wherein, after an accident, she lost the ability to preserve her memories beyond a day. Hence, every single day she has to familiarize herself with her husband, her house and the face she sees in the mirror. Christine then starts keeping a journal to reacquaint herself with the things related to her day to day life. Through these journals, though, Christine unravels some disparities between what her husband has been telling him, what her doctor informs her of her history and what she herself learns through her own reappearing memories. This is a superb psychological roller-coaster which will mystify and perhaps scared as well.
